DescriptionLocationInstructors The Georgia Trust, in collaboration with the Southern Architecture Foundation, Lord Aeck Sargent Architecture and Buckhead Heritage Society, has created this program, which is intended to educate real estate professionals on the history of Atlanta's architecture, the legal foundations of historic preservations, and the economic incentives that are available to many restoration and rehabilitation projects. Identifying and educating leaders in the field should help strengthen efforts to preserve historically significant resources in metropolitan Atlanta. A firm foundation in preservation will allow these professionals to work toward preservation solutions before they reach a critical outcome. This course will be presented over four sessions, with three required 2-hour lectures and an optional completion and networking opportunity. Lecture topics include a history of GA and metropolitan Atlanta; GA architectural styles; prominent historic architects of Atlanta; historic preservation law; and, economic incentives for historic preservation. McDonald Mark McDonald has served as President and CEO of The Georgia Trust since June 2008. He has over 25 years of professional involvement in historic preservation and a strong business background. Mr. McDonald has served as the Executive Director for three preservation organizations in the Southeast, including the Historic Salisbury Foundation in North Carolina, the Mobile Historic Development Commission in Mobil, Alabama and the Historic Savannah Foundation. Carmie McDonald Carmie McDonald is the Executive Director of Buckhead Heritage Society, a private non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic resources of Buckhead through advocacy and education. Prior to joining Buckhead Heritage, she served as Director for the Fox Theatre Institute, an outreach division of Atlanta's Fox Theatre. Her work included the preservation of the Fox Theatre's historic finishes and furnishings and the development of programs and services that share the Fox's knowledge with others. Kenneth Thomas Kenneth Thomas has worked for 33 years with the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, most of it as historian with the National Register program. He co-chaired the Coalition to Preserve the Georgia Archives in 2012-2013, a movement which was successful in bringing the archives back from the brink of closure to the public.
